Last night I attended a meeting of the Social Media Association of Long Island in which Marilyn Zayfert, President of illumiNET Digital Marketing, was the speaker.

Marilyn rose to prominence in her community during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. She used her knowledge of leveraging social media to amplify awareness, raise funds and spread information.

Her presentation to our group was about using social media for social good. Here are some of her tips for building community:

– Follow influencers, and follow the people they follow
– Follow local news sources
– Share information, and re-post relevant news to your followers

Regarding Facebook, Zayfert asserted that the number of “likes” on your page is not indicative of the success of your campaign. She said that Facebook will actually suppress your content if it’s for a “like” campaign. She encouraged us to become familiar with the “insights” button on facebook.

Zayfert encouraged social media organizers to post events with non-social channels, such as newspapers, tv channels, and press releases. She said that this has often resulted in media coverage at her events.
