Big Data – presentation by Tyler Roye of eGifter
I attended a great presentation on Big Data this morning. The Social Media Association of Long Island hosted Tyler Roye, CEO of eGifter.com to discuss how to use big data to target your customers:
Big data is not just about numbers…it’s about meaningful numbers.
One shocking fact cited by Roye is that “All the data created until the year 2003” = “All the data created every two days”!
Of particular interest to me as a recruiter was Roye’s assertion that “We’re in for the biggest talent shortage in history as far as what’s needed to handle big data”. According to Roye, there is more vc going into NYC than Silicon Valley, and there is…and will continue to be…an acute demand for Data Scientists, those “rare birds” that love to delve deeply into the data, can interpret it creatively, and can make informed recommendations to management.
One interesting application cited was that the hair salon Supercuts will give a bigger discount to someone who lives 4 miles away (40%) than to someone who lives a mile away (10%) because they know it is more difficult to draw in a new customer more than 3 miles from a salon.
How is eGifter utilizing Big Data:
All sorts of ways!
