Job Satisfaction of New Hires

Posted by Wendy Weber

Interesting report from Development Dimensions International Inc., a talent management consulting company.  As reported by Lauren Weber (no relation) in the Wall Street Journal, only 51% of new hires report feeling very confident they have made the right decision in accepting a new job.  Fifty-one percent?  What a dispiriting statistic!

The main complaint made by new hires is “Unrealistic, inaccurate pictures of the new job”.

This might be a good time for me to say that there is real benefit to working with a recruiter.  Especially if we have been engaged by a client with whom we have established a lengthy working relationship, we generally know the corporate culture, and “behind the scenes” information about the company and the position.  We know why the position is vacant, we have (or have written) the job description, and in many cases we have placed others on the team, providing insight about the team structure and dynamics.

Yes, the hiring process is a courtship, and we all hide our blemishes…new employers are no different in that respect (nor are new employees!)…

Weber summarizes by saying that to help correct the problem of unhappy new hires, “Managers need to carefully define what they’re looking for in a new hire, and put real thought into how best to determine whether a candidate has those qualities.”

Again, I would say that although executive recruiting fees can be daunting, if we do our job right, and the outcome is a happy, long-term employee, the investment may indeed be worthy of more serious consideration.  If you can avoid half of your workforce questioning their decision to work at your company, the right recruiter is “priceless”.
