E-Retailers Working Harder to Keep Good Employees
As a recruiter, I know firsthand how difficult it is to identify, attract, and recruit top talent.
A piece written by Allison Enright for the October issue of Internet Retailer begins by saying: “When the phone on the desk of an e-commerce professional rings, there’s a fair likelihood that the caller is a recruiter intent on feeling him out about another job.” Often, that recruiter is me. Or one of my staff. We devote considerable time and resources to developing relationships with the best ecommerce professionals, so that we can deliver them to our clients when they award a search for talent to Crandall Associates.
But Etailers are fighting back! They don’t want to lose their talent, and are finding creative new ways to retain ecommerce professionals.
According to one etailer, “We try our best to create a positive work environment, and show there’s room to grow with us.” Says another, “What keeps our people here is a no-drama corporate culture along with cool problems to work on.”
Contrary to what you might think, most ecommerce stars won’t jump ship just for higher compensation. In fact, many of them are aware that they could probably increase their salary by $10,000 if they accepted employment elsewhere. I would say the biggest reasons people leave a job is because they don’t get along well with their boss, or they feel under appreciated. They want to be “heard”, and they want to feel that they their contributions are recognized.
Although we are always happy when called upon to conduct a search for ecommerce talent, companies would be well advised to nurture, appreciate and take conscious steps to retain their employees. In my opinion, it that investment would pay off in spades.
